How to lay WPC decking boards. Installation of decking Is it possible to cut deck boards in an arc?

Do not use deck boards (WPC) as structures bearing a constant significant load!!!

To install decking boards (decking) you will need:

Electric jigsaw, carbide circular saw, drill, screwdriver/driver, level, pencil, ruler or tape measure.

Accessories:

Additional information about decking boards:

The decking board can withstand a uniformly distributed load of up to 600 kg/sq.m. It is not recommended to lay the boards at temperatures below 0°C. 24 hours before installation, WPC products should be placed next to the installation site to adapt to environment. Check each board thoroughly before installation. The warranty does not apply to boards damaged prior to installation or installed in violation of these instructions. Products made from wood-polymer composite have a single color throughout the entire depth of the product. Under the influence of sunlight and the environment, natural fading is possible while maintaining the basic tone, which is not a defect and is inherent in any products made from wood.

1. Preparing the surface for installation:

Wood-polymer composite logs can be placed on the following types of surfaces:

  • on a continuous, flat and hard (reinforced) surface (for example, on a concrete screed) without potholes or cracks, with a slope of 1°-2° to the side drainage system to remove moisture. In this case, the logs should be placed longitudinally to the slope so as not to contribute to moisture retention (Fig. 1).
  • on concrete support beams embedded in the ground or on concrete slabs. The supporting surface of the concrete base must be at least 30x30 cm in size, with the distance between the two nearest supports on which one joist is located no more than 30-40 cm, the distance between two adjacent joists should also not exceed 30-40 cm. No joists must be in contact with the ground. If necessary, you can lay a film (geotextile, bitumen carpet) to prevent weeds from growing through the expansion gaps of the flooring (Fig. 2).
  • If you want to lay the decking on a surface that prevents it from breaking its tightness (that is, in conditions where it is impossible to attach the logs to the surface with self-tapping screws), it is possible to arrange a rigid frame made of metal (pipe, wood or other hard material) on legs with a wide base and rubber pads under them.
  • on support beams made of wood or metal. The base must be strong, even and frost-resistant. The distance between the support beams should not exceed 400-500 mm.
Fig.1 Fig.2

2. Installation of WPC logs:

  • the use of WPC logs when installing decking boards on any of the bases specified in paragraph 1 of these instructions will prevent damage to the surface of the flooring, since WPC logs absorb the negative impact on the board caused by deformation of the base material under the influence of climatic and temperature factors
  • support beams should not be too long (no more than 3000mm), which ensures the stability of the flooring when weather and temperature conditions change.
  • the entire flooring must be well ventilated, for which it is necessary to maintain a gap between the flooring and the mounting surface (ground) of at least 3 cm.
  • support logs must be installed at the same level, the distance between the logs is 300-400 mm. (Fig. 3) Attach the joist directly to the base using self-tapping screws with plastic dowels. When laying the decking obliquely (at an angle of 45°), the distance between the joists should be halved. At the joints of the decking profile ends, it is necessary to lay a double row of support beams so that each end of the board rests on its own support beam. The width of the gap between the rows of support joists should be 3-5 mm. (Fig.4)
  • logs should be installed with a small gap at the ends - 3-5 mm.
  • in places where the WPC board is installed next to a wall (curbs, fences, pipes and other fixed barriers), the gap between the edge of the surface of the support beam and the board should be at least 25 mm. (Fig. 5).

Fig.3
Fig.4 Fig.5

3. Installation of boards on joists:

  • the boards are laid perpendicular to the joists.
  • Installation of the first row of boards is carried out using a starting clamp. Subsequent rows of boards are installed using a T-shaped plastic clamp, which provides an even, stable thermal seam of approximately 5 mm. Fastening the log to the mounting base and fastening the T-shaped plastic clamp to the log should take into account the possible expansion of the wood-polymer profile and should not be too tight (Fig. 6). In addition, tightening the screws too tightly reduces the tensile strength and may cause subsequent damage.
  • When installing decking, it is recommended to use stainless steel self-tapping screws.
  • When installing, it is necessary to maintain end thermal gaps of 3-5 mm between the boards (Fig. 4).
  • The length of the board should not protrude beyond the last row of support joists by more than 1 cm.
  • When laying the last row of boards, where the edge cannot be fixed with a clamp, it is allowed to screw in a self-tapping screw on the side of the main profile of the board at a distance of 2-3 mm from the edge.
  • Do not glue the boards together.
Fig.6 Fig.7

4. After installing the decking, an end strip is attached to the supporting joists (Fig. 7).

When laying terrace decking at ground level, it is advisable to provide a demarcating stone border, etc., to avoid direct contact between the decking and the lawn or soil.

Material consumption rate:

Consumption rates for standard installation 1 sq.m.
Terrace board - 6.9 m.
Mounting log - 3.3 m.
Plastic T-shaped clamp - 20 pcs., starting clamp - 3 pcs.
Self-tapping screws - 26 pcs.
We recommend taking into account a material reserve of 5%.

Rules for storing and caring for decking boards:

When storing the decking and when unloading it at the installation site, make sure that the boards are stacked on a flat surface.

Do not allow tools or other accessories that could damage the surface to move freely across the decking surface.

Avoid contact of the decking surface with construction debris.

If the flooring is dirty, you can carry out both dry and wet cleaning using cleaning products (with the exception of alkaline and abrasive products). In both cases, you can use a soft brush.

Terrace board - decking made of wood-polymer composite, this is a modern flooring material. Decking is mainly used in the construction of open terraces, which are becoming increasingly popular among owners of country houses.
Terrace serves to connect the external environment of the site with the living space of the house. It allows you to be outside the walls of the building in the fresh air, but at the same time spend time with the comfort inherent in a home environment. With the help of a terrace, you can connect the shore of a reservoir or the slope of a hill to your personal plot. Modern technologies construction allow the construction of terraces to quite easily expand them and increase their height, as well as fit terraces into any complex landscapes.
In addition, the material is widely used in the construction of: verandas, gazebos, piers, berths, decks. Often decking used in conjunction withdecorative fences from WPC, as a rule, this happens when arranging areas near swimming pools, children's playgrounds, garden paths and bridges, and patio areas. In general, WPC decking boards perfect option wherever a durable, moisture-resistant, safe and environmentally friendly material is needed that combines wood and plastic. Deck boards are produced by extruding 60% wood flour and 40% polymers under pressure at high temperatures.
The boards are painted completely to the full depth of the material and fade naturally over time without losing their primary color, that is, WPC decking naturally stabilizes color over time, just like wood products.
WPC decking boards have a number of advantages over conventional wooden boards. WPC productsare not subject to rotting, shrinkage and shrinkage, and withstand mechanical stress, temperature changes, sudden changes in seasons and high humidity, which allows the material to be used in difficult weather conditions. The biostability of the board is achieved by using special polymers in the decking board, making it immune to the effects of mold, fungi, bacteria and insects.
WPC decking boards can be cut, sawed, drilled, and self-tapping screws can be driven into it. To assemble decking boards, we recommend using regular carpentry tools.
The high-tech decking board has a natural appearance, And long time retains the original geometry, strength properties and even color; the material does not create additional concerns for maintenance of the flooring.

A fairly simple task: even non-professionals can cope with its installation.

The process is clear: we bought a decking board and laid it on the joists. But, installation of even the highest quality decking, if not carried out according to the rules of installation technology, will lead to the decking board being re-laid within a season.

How to avoid mistakes and lay the flooring correctly?

In this article we will talk about the main mistakes that are made when laying decking.

1. Incorrect preparation of the surface for laying the terrace system; its level is not maintained.

The surface on which the decking board will be installed must be as level as possible. If this is not done, immediately after laying the decking board, surface unevenness may be visible, which will intensify over time and deform the board.

2. Use of wooden logs.

Sometimes, in order to save money, buyers use wooden logs as the base of the flooring instead of WPC logs. Unfortunately, literally after one or two winters this will lead to forced large expenses, since wood and WPC have different coefficients of linear expansion. The two materials will elongate or contract differently due to temperature changes, causing the composite to be pulled out of the wood joist and pulled loose from its fasteners.

In addition, after 2-3 seasons, wooden logs, when exposed to moisture, will be susceptible to rotting and mold, cracking and swelling. This will immediately affect the surface of the WPC flooring; it will swell and sag.
You will have to spend money on dismantling, purchasing new logs made of WPC, and replacing the deformed decking with a new one.

All responsible manufacturers of WPC decking boards indicate clear recommended distances between joists for specific decking boards.

Trying to save money, sometimes clients install joists at a greater distance from each other. Because of this, the load on the board increases significantly, it sags and deforms under the weight. If you increase the center distance to the maximum unacceptable, the flooring will generally fall down.

4. No gap to compensate for linear expansion of the board.

WPC decking boards undergo linear expansion under the influence of the environment (like many other building materials). This means that when the air temperature changes, the board expands: it lengthens and narrows. A MANDATORY CONDITION FOR INSTALLING A TERRACE BOARD is to leave gaps to allow linear expansion of the decking. This is especially important to do at the junction with limiters (for example, a permanent structure)!

Why is it important? It’s very simple: one flooring will bend the other, breaking the edge of the board at the points of its mechanical fastening.

5. Loose or too tight fasteners.

We suggest using professional builders to install wood-polymer composite decking boards.

It is prohibited to use the product for other purposes, as columns, supports, beams and other load-bearing structures.WPC decking boards are intended for installation as flooring. The installation method is of great importance; incorrect installation can lead to a reduction in the service life of the material or to its damage. Please read the instructions carefully before installation, especially important pay attention to maintaining gaps between boards.

  1. During storage and unloading, make sure that the decking is laid on a flat surface, preferably on cross beams along the entire length of the boards.
  2. Avoid contact of the surface of the decking board with construction debris, etc.
  3. Strictly follow the recommendations for installing wood-polymer composite decking boards, and also use the recommended tools.
  4. If you have no experience in installing a terrace system, use the services of professionals.

Preparation of the terrace surface

Before the beginning installation of WPC decking boards, make sure that the surface is continuous and level (maximum recommended deviation is no more than 5mm). In case of installation on a solid concrete base, to prevent the joist from breaking or bending when drilling, it is advisable to use a metal fastener made of galvanized or stainless steel to prevent rust.

Adaptation, preparation and checking of decking

  1. Before installing the terrace, it is necessary to give the decking board time to adapt to the environment for 1-2 days. Place the decking on the joists. They should be located on a flat surface no more than 40 cm from each other.
  2. Installation must be carried out by at least two people.
  3. Do not install WPC decking at temperatures below 0°C.
  4. It is prohibited to use WPC terrace boards as a support or base for balconies, stairs, etc. In such cases, special measures should be taken in accordance with existing standards. WPC decking boards can be laid on existing balconies, stairs, etc.
  5. At the installation site, as with natural wood, it is necessary to ensure sufficient air circulation so that the space under the floor can dry properly. To achieve this, air must circulate at various points on the deck and a sufficient number of ventilation holes must remain open.
  6. Deck boards may have some color differences due to the presence of natural wood particles in the material from which they are made. Such differences are found in the products of all suppliers of WPC decking boards. Slight color differences may occur in different production batches of products. Painting and brushing of product samples is not strictly prescribed. In this regard, it is recommended to use boards only from the same production batch within the same project. The color of the decking changes during the first weeks after installation. This is a natural process caused by a combination of moisture absorption and exposure to ultraviolet rays, which may cause color differences between previously installed boards and those that have not yet been exposed. sunlight. These differences will disappear over time. Due to the above, color differences are expressly not covered by our warranty.

Carefully check each WPC deck board before installation. An installed board that is damaged before installation (and is nevertheless installed) is not covered by the warranty! The guarantee in all cases is limited to the supply of replacement boards.

About expansion gaps (longitudinal seams)

Longitudinal seams when laying WPC terrace boards are necessary to ensure drainage (draining water from the surface of the terrace system), as well as convenient cleaning of the surface. In addition, expansion joints provide slight thermal expansion/contraction of the WPC decking profile during temperature changes in the environment.

When laying terrace decking, there are two installation options: seam and seamless.

Suture- formed during installation of the terrace using a stainless steel clamp or plastic clip. The seam size is 4-5mm.

This installation option is a prerequisite when assembling a terrace outdoors and in places of high humidity. This method ensures maximum product life.

Seamless- an option for constructing a closed terrace or installing decking in the premises. Fastening is carried out with a stainless steel clamp with a gap between the boards of up to 1-2mm. This method eliminates debris from entering the system, and also makes its appearance more attractive and convenient to use.

The main rules for installing WPC decking boards

  1. CIRCULATION- it is necessary to ensure sufficient air circulation under the decking, and also to prevent direct contact of structural elements with the ground or grass covering
  2. THERMAL EXPANSIONS- it is imperative to take into account the expansion along the length and width of all structural elements due to changes in temperature and humidity during operation
  3. DRAINAGE- when installing the terrace, maintain a slope of the decking surface of 1-3% for better drainage.
  4. INSTALLATION- laying is carried out at an air temperature not lower than 0ºС.

INSTALLATION OF WPC TERRACE BOARDS

Installation of mounting joists made of WPC

WPC installation logs should not be too long, the recommended length is 3 meters. The step between the central axes of the rows of joists should be 33cm, maximum 35-40cm. The logs should be installed with a small gap at the ends. The gap between the ends of the support beams should be 20mm.

  1. The joists should not be considered as a supporting structure, they themselves should rest on something along their entire length, with the exception of cases where the deck is mounted on pedestals (supports). Between the pedestals it is necessary to maintain a distance of no more than 40 cm (center-to-center). The logs must not be embedded in concrete, glued or otherwise attached to each other.
  2. The logs must not be in the water.
  3. The logs are laid with the grooved side down and the groove up. The groove allows you to install the screw with the clip exactly in the center of the mounting joist.
  4. The logs are laid at a distance of at least 10 mm in length and width from any fixed structure. There must be a gap of at least 20 mm between the lags.
  5. Condensation and water flow along the deck boards, i.e. perpendicular to the joists. Therefore, gaps should be left between the cross joists to ensure good drainage.
  6. Rigid fastening of the joists to the base is not allowed. To press the logs, it is necessary to use brackets made of stainless steel or aluminum, at intervals of about 1 m.
  7. The ends of each board should rest on the joists. Secure the ends to avoid any possible deformation under the board's own weight, and to avoid the risk of the board breaking when loaded on the lip. When laying boards longitudinally, both edges should rest on separate parallel logs.
  8. If the logs cannot be attached to the base (for example, on the roof), they can be laid and fixed on pedestals (supports) located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from each other (center-to-center). In this case, aluminum joists should be used instead of conventional wood composite joists. Make a frame (frame) from aluminum joists (placed perpendicular to each other) to prevent the boards from sagging towards the center.

Expansion gap

Be sure to leave room in advance for linear expansion of the boards. In places where the decking is installed next to a wall, the gap between the edge of the decking surface and the wall should be from 20 to 30mm. Taking into account the thermal expansion or contraction properties of the main decking profiles made of WPC, the recommended length for the main decking profiles is 3m.

Fastening the board with a clamp. Assembly of the terrace.

Before screwing the screw into the mounting joist, it is necessary to make a hole of a smaller diameter with a drill, no more than ¾ of the diameter of the screw.

To fix the board more tightly and evenly, use a mallet. Tap the side closest to you to create an even gap along the entire length of the main profile.

Where the ends of the main profile meet, use double rows of support joists so that each end of the board rests on its own support beam. The width of the gap between the rows of support profiles should be from 3 to 5 mm.

When laying the last row of the board, where the edge cannot be fixed with a clip, it is allowed to screw in a self-tapping screw/drive a nail into the side of the main profile of the board - at a distance of 2-3mm from the edge.

If the length of the main profile extends beyond the last row of support joists, then the length of the part of the decking protruding above the joist should be less than 2 cm. Otherwise, deformations, breaks or other defects associated with the weight load falling on such places are inevitable.

The final stage of installing the terrace is edging the terrace with a wood grain corner or an end strip around the perimeter. The corner or strip is fastened with a self-tapping screw.

Installing trim corner or end strip

The corner and end strip are used to finish the perimeter of the terrace. They improve the appearance of the terrace flooring, hiding the appearance of the structural elements. Unlike the corner of the wood panel, the end strip does not have a protrusion on the surface of the terrace.

  1. Make sure that the joists at the edge of the deck are at least 5mm longer than the boards.
  2. Saw off a corner or end strip to size and place it along the edge of the flooring, maintaining a distance of at least 5 mm between the board and the plinth.
  3. Screw them tightly to the joists using long stainless steel screws.

OPERATION AND CARE OF WPC TERRACE BOARDS

  1. For regular maintenance, use a brush or a high-pressure cleaner (max. 80 bar). When cleaning, clean the boards in the direction they are laid. Do not use an industrial high-pressure dirt cleaner, and to avoid damaging the boards, do not bring the water jet too close. If necessary, you can use a mild detergent. The use of solvents, stain removers, paints and polishes is prohibited under any circumstances.
  2. To avoid the appearance of moss, make sure that the gaps between the boards are clean and water drains well. You can also prevent the appearance of moss by cleaning your decking regularly.
  3. It is recommended to regularly rearrange flower pots and other items to prevent uneven aging of the decking.
  4. Grease and oil stains are best and fastest removed using a household degreaser. Do not allow stains to dry or penetrate into the panel material. If the stain is dry, remove it thoroughly with a high-pressure cleaner and sand in the direction of the grooves. After some time, the discolored area should even out in color.
  5. Scratches can be removed using a wire brush. First, wet the boards as much as possible to prevent discoloration. Gently walk along the entire length of the board to remove any scratches. The resulting slight discoloration will fade over time.
  6. In shaded or partially covered areas, damp spots may appear, which will disappear over time when exposed to ultraviolet radiation or bad weather conditions. This will not affect the actual quality characteristics of the board, so any complaints or claims in this regard will not be considered. This effect will disappear over time, but it cannot be completely avoided. You can speed up its disappearance by brushing.

NOTE

  1. In the case of using WPC decking boards for gazebos, terraces, etc. It is not recommended to use wooden joists, since the thermal expansion of logs made of natural wood differs from the characteristics of materials made of WPC, which can lead to a violation of the geometry or integrity of the terrace flooring.
  2. At the junction of the ends of the terrace boards it is necessary to lay two parallel support logs. That is, the edge of each board rests on its own lag.
  3. During installation, We recommend installing each next row of boards in a “running start” with the joints offset by at least 1/3 of the length of the board.
  4. If during installation you used wedges between the boards and walls, then don't forget to delete them.
  5. End of the board must lie on the log and attached to it with a clip or clamp.
  6. It is not recommended to attach the corner to the edge of the step, since it performs more of a decorative function. We recommend installing an aluminum corner on the edge of the step.
  7. To avoid coals getting onto the decking board (for example, from a barbecue), place a metal sheet under the grill itself.

PRINCIPLE OF INSTALLING WPC TERRACE BOARDS ON A PLASTIC CLIP

HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT INSTALLING WPC DECKING?

- CALL.

Decking (terrace board) flooring is used for the floors of garden terraces, terraces on exploited roofs, for garden paths, concrete floors of balconies, piers and piers, floors under carports, as floor boards, etc. P.

Temperature expansion of decking

Temperature changes, as well as humidity, cause decking to expand or shrink along the length, width or thickness. This is directly related to the presence of a large wood component (up to 70%). The maximum expansion of WPC profiles is up to 0.2% per linear meter along the length or width of the coating. In this regard, when laying terrace flooring, appropriate expansion gaps should be provided at all fixed barriers (for example, at the walls of buildings, garden fences, wells, curbs, supports, parapets, drainpipes, etc.), since otherwise There may be stresses that can lead to warping or swelling of the coating.

Ventilation of decking

All decking must have good ventilation. To ensure unhindered air circulation, the voids between the elements of the supporting structure and the coating should not be filled with anything. When laying terrace flooring at ground level, it is necessary to provide a demarcating stone border, etc. Be sure to avoid direct contact between the decking and the lawn or soil. For sufficient ventilation, an open gap around the perimeter of at least 20 mm wide is required.

Drainage of water from the decking surface in an open area

Water that falls in the form of precipitation must be drained:

  1. due to the provided slope of 1% to 3% in the longitudinal direction of the laid terrace boards (decking)
  2. and of course with the help of the mounting slot, which appears due to the fastening of the decking with a mounting stainless clip.

Processing wood-polymer composite decking

WPC decking can be sawed, milled or drilled with all common woodworking tools, just like a regular wooden board.

Changing decking color

Terrace boards (decking) are painted in the mass and fade naturally over time without losing the main color tone. Changes in the color of the surface layer are acceptable, since DECKING is a wood based product and should be expected to naturally change color over time due to exposure to UV radiation and humidity. It can occur primarily in the first weeks and months (depending on weather conditions), which does not indicate any defect, then the color evens out with the formation of a patina (natural darkening of the board).

Cleaning and maintenance of wood decking

Decking does not require special care, but significant stains must be removed immediately after they appear. To do this, the board should be cleaned longitudinally using warm water, household detergents and ordinary household equipment. If there are stains that are difficult to remove, you can use high pressure cleaning (do not use a milling cutter!). It is very useful to use a brush. After cleaning, rinse the boards well with plenty of running water. Oil stains or cigarette marks can be removed by simply sanding the damaged area.

INSTALLATION

a) Leveling the base

The primary stage of installing any decking board is to prepare the base for the future decking. Before installing the decking board, the surface must be leveled and, if necessary, strengthened.

b) Laying installation joists

Installation joists must be laid on a concrete or cement-sand base reinforced with metal mesh, or on a flat, prepared (well-compacted) surface made of crushed stone or sand (pad thickness 3-5 cm). The recommended slope in the direction from the building is 1-3% of the length of the laid surface. The distance between the mounting logs is 30-33 cm.

Recommended distance when laying mounting joists for TERRA deck boards. In the event of an increase in future loads on the flooring (vehicle entry, a large number of people, etc.), the distance between the logs must be reduced to 20-25 cm.

c) Installation of decking boards

The installation gap between the boards should be 2-3 mm. This distance is formed by fastening with a decking clip; it is necessary to drain water from the surface of the decking.

The distance from the end of the board or joist to the wall is calculated based on the total length of the floor covering. 1 mm gap per 1 linear meter of board. For example: Covering length 10 meters - gap 10 mm. (Fig. 2).

The distance between the lags at the end must be at least 10 mm. (Fig. 3). The board is attached to the joists with mounting clips and 3.8x35 screws, galvanized (Fig. 2). For 1 m2 of terrace board measuring 150x20, with a pitch between joists of 33.3 cm, 20 mounting clips are required.

In the case of using decking boards for gazebos, terraces, etc. It is not recommended to use wooden logs, because The thermal expansion of wooden logs differs from the data of a WPC decking board, which can lead to a violation of the geometry of the flooring.

Installing a terrace does not require any special skills!

Subject to these installation conditions, no deformation of the finished flooring is guaranteed.
